PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has praised Zimbabweans for their contribution to the economic growth of the country despite the burden of illegal sanctions and the effects of climate change.

Addressing thousands of Zimbabweans who gathered at Nembudziya Open Ground in Gokwe North, Midlands Province, for the country’s 45th Independence Celebrations, the President noted that despite the enduring impact of sanctions, climate-induced droughts, and global economic turbulence, Zimbabwe remains on a steadfast path towards prosperity.

“The continuing sanctions, climate change-induced setbacks, global economic shocks, and machinations by detractors, desperate to see us divided, have not derailed our course,” the President stated.

“From the household level up to our respective provinces and the nation as a whole, we are defying the odds, breaking records and realising uncommon development successes.”

He said Zimbabwe’s economy continues to experience positive growth, citing a projected 5.6% GDP growth in 2025, driven largely by the mining sector and increasing capacity in local manufacturing, including the pharmaceutical sector which has seen utilisation rise to 50%.

The President emphasised Zimbabwe’s self-reliance and resilience, crediting policies such as the Agriculture Transformation Strategy and the Pfumvudza/Intwasa Programme for increased productivity and rural development.

“The ongoing Agriculture Transformation Strategy is further deepening rural reforms to ensure food security, increased grain production and agricultural efficiency. Improved incomes for farmers, beginning at household levels are evident while poverty eradication initiatives anchored by the agriculture sector have broadened.”

The President said the choice of venue for this year’s Independence Celebrations is in honour of liberation heroes who hail from the Midlands Province.
