THE Government says it appreciates the role of the church in Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development agenda.

Addressing Roman Catholic congregants at a thanksgiving mass for Father Cellestino Magwenzi at Mt St Mary’s High School in Wedza, Vice President General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga emphasised that the church has been instrumental in advancing key sectors such as education and healthcare, which are crucial to the nation’s development agenda.

“We appreciate as a government the role that the Roman Catholic Church has played in the development of our nation, especially in schools and hospitals,” he said.

“Here in Mashonaland East, we have the Roman Catholic institutions in nearly every district where they have transformed people’s lives,” Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo said.

Father Magwenzi who hails from Wedza but has been posted to Mashonaland Central said he will continue to serve his country and church with dedication.

“I have dedicated my life to serving my country in the area of evangelism,” he said.

Vice President Chiwenga also toured a girls’ hostel at Mt St Mary’s Mission being constructed at the school.

The hostel will accommodate 280 students.
