SADC Heads of State and Government are set to convene in Harare this Friday for an extraordinary summit to discuss the volatile situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) fueled by M23 rebels.
Speaking to ZBC News in Harare this Wednesday, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira said the meeting, which will be chaired by SADC Chairperson, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, will focus on addressing the conflict in DRC’s Goma City.
Heads of State will debate and make decisions on peace efforts for the eastern DRC.
Professor Murwira noted the need to maintain and restore peace, highlighting that conflict and instability have an adverse effect on economic development efforts in the region.
The extraordinary summit follows an emergency virtual extraordinary SADC Troika Summit held in Tanzania this Tuesday to discuss the DRC crisis.
The regional meetings come on the back of continued aggression by the M23 rebels operating in Eastern DRC, who have killed thousands and displaced millions in North Kivu.
