Harare City Council top official admits corruption allegations within council

THE Commission of Inquiry into the governance of Harare City Council has uncovered shocking allegations of a web of corruption, revealing that the city council collected a mere US$100 from tuckshops over four months.

The Harare City Council’s Acting Revenue Collection Manager Mr Alfred Guni appeared before the Commission of inquiry this Tuesday, to answer to widespread allegations of corruption within Harare City Council.

In his submission, Mr Guni admitted that tuckshop barons are wreaking havoc within the city by collecting fees on behalf of the council, sparking concerns about transparency and accountability.

According to Mr Guni, the Harare City Council collected only US$100 in four months, allegations which surprised the Commission of Inquiry about the effectiveness of the city’s revenue collection system.

“We only collected US$100 dollars from tuckshops over four months,” he said.

He also submitted that Harare City Council is being deprived of its rightful revenue from its subsidiaries amid allegations of widespread corruption.

“We are being deprived of rightful share since some subsidiaries are not paying to us.”

The Commission of Inquiry into the governance of Harare City Council was appointed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to investigate the operations of Harare City Council since 2017 amid allegations of widespread corruption, financial mismanagement and nepotism.

The Judge Justice Maphios Cheda-led Commission of Inquiry has so far unearthed serious allegations of financial mismanagement within the Council.

Meanwhile the Commission has adjourned to the 16th of this month.
