The energy projects launched in Hwange this Monday are set to transform the country’s power generation dynamics forever, thereby improving industry and citizens’ access to energy.

Power utility company, ZESA Holdings, has taken hard knocks due to electricity challenges being experienced countrywide.

However, the groundbreaking project, which will see the construction of a 720-megawatt thermal power station and a 200-megawatt solar power plant is a national commitment to bring investment into the sector.

The investor company, Titan New Energy, is clear on targets to deliver the project within the set timeframe.

Zesa executive chairperson, Dr Sydney Gata said the project is expected to be operational by the end of 2028 and be generating an estimated 920 megawatts of electricity.

It emerged the US$1 billion project is one of the 18 that are ongoing at various stages of implementation.

The Minister of Energy and Power Development, Hon Edgar Moyo said, “I can’t stand before the nation and vow that this will be the end of load-shedding. This is one out of the 18 other projects of power generating companies that will be built.”

Government says it will continue to create an investor-friendly environment to propel the energy and power development sector.

“We remain committed to fostering a conducive climate for investment in the energy sector. These power plants are a testimony of government commitment to ensuring power Development,” noted Hon Richard Moyo, Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution.

Government is on a drive to ensure the country achieves energy self-sufficiency through attracting investment in the energy sector and harnessing of renewable energy, with Zimbabwe targeting to be a net power exporter by 2030.
