Govt urges media to prioritise fact-checking in reporting

Story by ZBC News Reporter

THE government has implored the media to always verify facts in their line of work.

In a statement, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere criticised the Newsday for failing to adhere to journalistic ethics of objectivity and impartiality after recently publishing an article which falsely claimed President Emmerson Mnangagwa was utilising parallel structures to extend his term.

Dr Muswere highlighted that President Mnangagwa is a democratically elected President and First Secretary of the ruling ZANU PF party.

He urged the Newsday to retract the story in the spirit of professionalism and responsible journalism.

Dr Muswere noted that the government has made significant strides in instituting legal and regulatory reforms which have allowed the media to flourish and effectively execute its duties.
