CCC led Harare Council attempted to influence the 2023 general elections

Story by Peter Chivhima

Over 300 illegal cooperatives benefited from fraudulent land regularisation by Harare City Council ahead of the August 2023 General Elections as the opposition-led local authority sought to influence the outcome of the polls.

This came out when Harare City Council Town Clerk Engineer Hosiah Chisango appeared before the Commission of Inquiry this Monday to respond to the allegations of corruption.

The inquiry also heard that Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councillors brought another 24 settlements with a total of 5066 stands for recommendation and regularisation as part of a well-calculated vote buying scheme.

The Commission of Inquiry was appointed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to probe the operations of the Harare City Council since 2017.

Meanwhile, Engineer Chisango will be back before the Commission of Inquiry this Tuesday for further questioning, as the inquest into Harare City Council’s operations continues.
