ZIMBABWE is set to deepen cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Russian Federation following the presentation of credentials by newly appointed UNDP Resident Coordinator-designate Ms Rosemary Kalapurakal and Russian Ambassador-designate His Excellency Sergei Berdnikov to President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House in Harare this Thursday.
Ms Kalapurakal, who was the first to present her credentials, later held discussions with the President and government officials on development priorities and areas of cooperation.
Speaking after the meeting, she said her tenure would focus on advancing inclusive and sustainable development through integrated approaches that address key national challenges.
“You should expect a very strong focus on inclusive and integrated sustainable development, looking at multi-sectoral approaches that address some of the key development challenges in the country, whether they range from climate resilience to opportunities for young people, unlocking SDG development financing, looking at addressing issues such as substance abuse and drugs and crime, and so on.”
She also welcomed Zimbabwe’s recent election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, describing it as an important opportunity for the country to contribute to global peace and security discussions.
“It is a huge opportunity for a country like Zimbabwe. The world is facing so many peace and security issues, and the Security Council has an important role to play. Zimbabwe can bring its experience and growing stature on the regional and global stage, as well as an African voice, to speak to the ideals of the United Nations Charter and rules-based international cooperation.”
Russian Ambassador-designate Sergei Berdnikov also presented his credentials and outlined areas of cooperation that are expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Harare and Moscow.
He identified mineral extraction, agriculture and infrastructure development among the priority sectors for enhanced collaboration.
“Key priorities as rightfully mentioned by the President to develop our economic cooperation in various fields, first of all, mineral extraction, agriculture and infrastructural development.”
The presentation of credentials comes as Zimbabwe continues to broaden engagement with international partners in pursuit of economic growth, investment and sustainable development.
