Zimbabwe appends signature to key regional cooperation agreements

Story by Theophilus Chuma

ZIMBABWE is exploring ways of expanding its regional trade market share after approving the Southern African Development Community (SADC) protocol on Industry.

The country’s latest strides to consolidate regional cooperation are expected to unlock export value and improve earnings.

Government, through the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, this Tuesday confirmed it has approved the SADC Protocol on Industry.

“Cabinet considered and approved the Memorandum on the Ratification of the SADC Protocol on Industry. Cabinet wishes to inform the nation that the ratification of the protocol will unlock significant economic opportunities for Zimbabwe through collaboration, resource access, and increased investment in vital areas such as research, infrastructure, and Small to Medium Enterprises,” he said.

In addition, Zimbabwe is also unlocking value on its human capital after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Malawi on Labour and Employment.

“The main objective of the Memorandum of Understanding is to establish a legal framework for institutional relations on cooperation between Zimbabwe and Malawi. The two countries have jointly decided to cooperate in areas such as labour dispute resolution and social dialogue, labour law reform, social security, employment services, and labour migration,” he added.

Experts say the move is a significant development in cementing organised migration.

Government has also strengthened systems around the protection of children’s rights after completing a State Party Report to the African Union Committee of Experts on Children’s Rights.
