THE Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda held a highly interactive and introspective dialogue with His Excellency Wang Huning, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) this Wednesday, to enhance the already strong relationship between Zimbabwe and China.

The primary focus of the discussions was to consolidate the strategic framework between the two nations, as well as to foster further collaboration between their parliamentary institutions.

His Excellency Huning, lauded President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s historic visit to China in 2024, which cemented the “five-star ironclad” cooperation model.

This collaboration, he emphasised, was not only about strengthening political ties but also about advancing socio-economic development through targeted initiatives in infrastructure, agriculture, and energy.

Chairman Wang also commended the reciprocal support that Zimbabwe and China provide to each other’s development, particularly in the international arena, where the two nations share similar positions on issues such as the “One China” policy and the push for a more multipolar world order.

Advocate Mudenda acknowledged the 45-year diplomatic relationship between Zimbabwe and China, highlighting China’s significant support during the liberation struggle, particularly in training freedom fighters.

He particularly pointed to the contributions made by China towards Zimbabwe’s infrastructure, including the construction of the New Parliament Building, as well as the energy sector projects such as the Kariba South hydropower renovation and the Hwange 7 and 8 power stations.

Advocate Mudenda also called for greater cooperation between the two nations’ parliamentary institutions.

He proposed the establishment of a Zimbabwe-China Parliamentary Friendship Association, which would facilitate parliamentary exchanges and encourage collaboration on best practices, especially in areas like special economic zones and business-friendly laws.
