THE ruling ZANU PF party has joined Government and development partners in a drive to improve working conditions for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through the provision of decent market infrastructure and the formalisation of the sector.
The initiative follows resolutions adopted at an all-stakeholders conference held in March and is aimed at bringing greater order, dignity and growth to the SME industry.
A team led by the ZANU PF Economic Development and Empowerment Department toured SME market stalls in Harare on Friday to assess operating conditions and engage stakeholders on measures to strengthen the sector.
ZANU PF Secretary for Economic Development and Empowerment, Dr Sithembiso Nyoni said improving workplace conditions is key to encouraging formalisation and supporting business growth.
“We are now in the process of coming on board to assist our SMEs. The conference was an eye-opener as it revealed the challenges they are facing.
“We are saying our SMEs require proper working conditions. We want to erect shades and ablution facilities. Once they feel dignified, they may begin the process of formalisation,” she said.
Deputy Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Honourable Kiven Mutimbanyoka commended the quality of products being produced by SMEs and said efforts were underway to secure more competitive markets and improve business infrastructure.
“We have seen that some of the products produced by our SMEs are top-notch. What we can assure them is that we are in the process of finding them competitive markets. They also require spaces with proper facilities for them to engage in serious business,” he said.
SME operators welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step towards improving business conditions and unlocking growth opportunities.
“We are very happy with the commitment that has been put in place by the Government. This shows that we have not been forgotten, and that we are part of Vision 2030 as SMEs,” an SME operator said.
“We are also pleased to have a caring Government. The idea of having a decent workplace is everyone’s dream. Today, we look to the future with enthusiasm,” an entrepreneur said.
The latest intervention is expected to improve operating conditions, support formalisation and strengthen the contribution of SMEs to economic growth.
The drive aligns with the Second Republic’s inclusive development agenda and broader efforts to empower entrepreneurs as Zimbabwe advances towards Vision 2030.
