THE Young Women for Economic Development has launched a new empowerment forum aimed at equipping college students with skills and resources to start their businesses while pursuing their studies.

The forum, which is being rolled out at tertiary institutions across the country with a revolving fund of US$2 000 per institution, was officially launched at Harare Polytechnic College this Thursday.

The founder of Young Women for ED, Honourable Tatenda Mavetera, who is also the Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, emphasised the importance of consistency in the business initiative.

“As young women, you can be tempted because of hunger. We know there are blessers, don’t be swayed. As young women, let’s be focused. Identify what you want to do as a young person. Let’s appreciate the efforts our parents are putting in. Today, we are launching the Young Women for ED Empowerment Forum and we are putting in US$2000. Get into a group, think of an idea and we will sponsor you. We believe in the power of networking,” she said.

Students expressed enthusiasm in the initiative which is expected to open boundless opportunities.

“I will pitch my idea and I hope our group will win this money so that we can start our businesses and empower ourselves as young women,” said a student.

In addition to the empowerment forum, the event also featured a breast cancer awareness campaign led by doctors from the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the doctors provided information and education on the disease.
