Women’s Premier Soccer League delayed by a week amid preparatory delays

Story by Anashe Murombedzi, Sports Reporter

THE start of the 2025 Women’s Premier Soccer League season has been delayed by a week due to the clubs’ lack of readiness, the league’s administrators have said.

The highly anticipated season was scheduled to kick off this weekend, with many looking forward to witnessing the country’s top female footballers in action.

However, the games will only start a week as clubs get more time to prepare and also pay affiliation fees.

“We have now prioritised giving them the necessary support to ensure a successful league,” Women Premier Soccer League spokesperson, Arthur Gurajena said.

The postponement comes as a relief to teams like newly promoted Red Buffalo Queens, who were struggling to raise the affiliation fees required to participate in the league.

With the new deadline, Red Buffalo Queens have more time to resolve their financial challenges.

Meanwhile, the 2025 season will feature 16 teams, including newly promoted teams Red Buffalo Queens from the Eastern Region, Kwekwe Queens from the Central Region, Craneborne Royals from the Northern Region, and Mpopoma Sports Academy from the Southern Region.
