THE Zimbabwe national football team, the Warriors, are now using the remaining World Cup qualifier matches to remain competitive ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations set for Morocco in December.
The Warriors play Rwanda in South Africa this Tuesday.
With their World Cup dream dashed after a 1-0 loss to Benin, the Warriors are now looking ahead to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which is months away.
Speaking ahead of the Warriors’ World Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Tuesday, coach Michael Nees said they are ready to field a strong side to give the team a good momentum for the AFCON tournament set to be hosted by Morocco in December.
“We need to be a competitive team. There are still other teams fighting for something, and we cannot be accused of not taking games seriously. On the other hand, we want to get into a positive mood towards AFCON, so maybe try other players to give others a chance to showcase themselves. It is a World Cup qualification game, and we need to win and show a different face in the game.”
For the Rwanda match, the Warriors will welcome back Vice Captain Marshall Munetsi, who missed the Benin match due to suspension.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Martin Mapisa might get a chance to start after Washington Arubi’s appearance in the previous match.
Fans will also be eager to watch Scottland’s Musona brothers and forward Tymon Machope in action.
This year’s AFCON tournament will be held between December 21 and January 18, 2026.
Zimbabwe are in Group B alongside Egypt, South Africa and Angola.
