AS the government accelerates rural transformation, Village Business Units (VBUs) have become vital engines of development, improving nutrition, enhancing access to clean water, and boosting livestock production.
In dry areas such as Ngundu-Tokwane under Chief Nyajena, communities that previously struggled to access water and pasture during the summer months are now benefiting from the establishment of VBUs, including the Hamamaoko Cooperative.
“This area is known to be very dry, and for years we struggled to access clean water and nutritious food for our families. The establishment of this VBU has changed our lives, now we can grow vegetables and run various income-generating projects for our families,” Ms Sibongile Pikanisi said.
“This cooperative has not only improved food security but also created employment opportunities, especially for us women and youths. During this time of the year, both people and livestock used to walk long distances for clean water. Now, we have enough water for our gardens and cattle. We are even supplying fresh vegetables to nearby communities and earning money to look after our families,” Fungai Tarwirei said.
Beyond the VBUs, skills development programmes are also empowering communities to create their own sources of income and uplift their standards of living.
“I come from Chisase area. After finishing school two years ago, I have not been employed; however, through the Tonganyika Trust, I was trained in detergent making, and now I produce soaps and other cleaning products for sale,” Maguta Dennis said.
“I am proud to have received my certificate in hotel and catering. It is a great start for me. I plan to start a small cake-baking business to support my family,” Emelda Zirebwa said.
The positive impact of these initiatives is being felt across Masvingo District, where devolution and other empowerment programmes have been rolled out.
“In Masvingo District, we have seen a number of VBUs established, and they have truly changed the face of our communities. Devolution has also helped build new clinics, classroom blocks, roads, and bridges that are improving people’s lives,” Masvingo Rural District Council Chairperson, Councillor Elias Jera said.
“The programmes we are implementing with government support are centred on empowering our people, especially women and youths. By equipping them with skills and creating sustainable projects like VBUs, we are fighting poverty from within our communities,” Masvingo South Legislator, Honourable Tanatswa Mukomberi said.
Government-led rural industrialisation programmes are redefining the rural landscape across the country, promoting innovation and self-reliance.
