SCHOOLS open for the final term of the learning calendar this Tuesday, with boarding school learners from across the country trooping back to their respective institutions this Monday.
The boarding school learners thronged various pick-up points in Harare as they trekked back to their respective schools.
Examination class students, including those sitting for Grade Seven, O Level and A Level examinations, are optimistic about achieving good results.
“I am an upper-six student and I pray and hope that I will be able to pass my final year examinations together with my mates and those in writing classes also,” a student, Thandeka Kandiwa said.
“I am an ‘O’ Level candidate and I am aiming to pass my final year exam so that I can proceed to A level. I believe I am going to make it because during the holiday we had vacation lessons,” another student, Shanila Masendeke said.
Despite various challenges, parents say they are determined to ensure their children get quality education.
“Preparations for back to school were a bit difficult, but as a parent, you have to do what needs to be done and make sure children have everything they need to go and learn without stress,” a parent said.
“We appreciate the time we spent with our children and we are happy they are returning to school. Even though it is not always rosy, we sacrifice for our children,” another added.
“I am happy because last year we had a good harvest, when you have food on the table, life is easier, even back to school won’t be that difficult. I expect my child to come up with flying colours this term,” a parent noted.
Meanwhile, it was a hive of activity in the central business district as other parents were still engaged in last-minute shopping for the necessary learning material, with vendors and retailers ready to serve them.
“I am taking this day as a very important day since I am taking this opportunity to sell school wear to parents. I believe I will get a few dollars to also pay fees for my children,” a vendor said.
“The business has been low for some time, but today, customers are coming in big numbers to do their last-minute shopping and we are taking every chance to rake in those cents,” a retailer noted.
As schools open, focus is not only on the upcoming national examinations but also on the implementation of the Heritage-Based Education framework, which emphasises the impartation of practical skills.
