Story by Patience Nyagato

THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) has condemned the attack of soldiers on a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by M23 rebels.

In a statement, the SADC Secretariat this Saturday condemned the attacks on the regional military mission, adding that the actions undermine the sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace and security of DRC and the SADC region.

The attacks, which are part of a territorial expansion pursuit by the M23 armed group are exacerbating existing dire humanitarian and security situation which has left thousands of people dead and has forced millions in North Kivu province especially women, children and the elderly to flee their homes.

Reports state that at least 13 foreign peacekeepers were recently killed by M23 rebels in Eastern city of Goma.

SADC has sent its heartfelt condolences to the countries and families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat added the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) continues to support efforts to address the security and humanitarian situation prevailing in Eastern DRC.
