NOMINATION Courts for the Gutu East and Insiza North by-elections sat in Masvingo and Gwanda this Thursday, with seven candidates successfully filing the nomination papers for the two vacant parliamentary seats.
The by-elections are set for June 14.
In Masvingo, three candidates were duly nominated for the Gutu East parliamentary seat at the Nomination Court, which sat at the Masvingo Magistrates Court.
The Nomination Court Officer, Mr Taurayi Gavi, confirmed the names of the three candidates; Zvarevashe Masvingise of the ZANU PF party, independent candidate Gift Gonese, and Zivanai Nzvenga of the NCA.
“Since more than one candidate has been duly nominated for the election, a poll shall take place in accordance with Section 46 Subsection 17 paragraph C of the Electoral Act Chapter 213 as read with Proclamation number 3 of 2025. The election shall take place on June 14,” he said.
The nomination court opened at 1000 hours and officially closed at 1600 hours.
The Gutu East seat fell vacant following the expulsion of former legislator Benjamin Ganyiwa from the ruling ZANU PF party.
In Gwanda, four candidates were cleared to contest the Insiza North by-election.
The successful candidates praised the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for a smooth process.
“The process went well, there was no fear or intimidation, everything was well organised,” ZAPU candidate, Mr Thabani Mlotshwa stated.
“With the turnout at the primary elections, we are assured of victory and we want to pursue the President’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind,” ZANU PF candidate, Cde Delani Moyo said.
The Nomination Officer, Mr Richard Ndlovu says the Nomination Court, which opened at 1000 hours, accepted four candidates’ papers and rejected one.
“We had only two candidates who lodge their papers before the sitting of the court and during the day, an additional three filed their papers and of the three, one was rejected.”
The Insiza North seat became vacant after the death of Cde Farai Taruvinga in March this year.
The nomination process in both constituencies was described by candidates as smooth and transparent, paving the way for a competitive poll next month.
