Nkayi district praises government for water project

Story by Mhlomuli Ncube

THE construction of the Ziminya Dam in Nkayi District by the Second Republic is expected to address water challenges in the area.

At its inception, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration pledged to complete stalled projects while also initiating new ones to transform communities countrywide.

Pegged in 1952, the construction of Ziminya Dam is finally taking off after the Second Republic set aside funding for the project.

For an area that usually experiences water challenges, its potential benefits to agriculture and domestic water supply have excited locals.

A village member said, “This project is very important to us and It will solve a lot of our water challenges.”

“We are seeing a very important intervention. Ziminya Dam will be a water delivery game changer. When we look at it, we realise that our water crisis here in Nkayi will now be a thing of the past,” said another villager.

The project is expected to deliver a 98 cubic metre dam with Shangani as its catchment area.

Former Nkayi South legislator, Cde Stars Mathe, envisages a package of huge benefits for the community.

Hon Stars Mathe said, “The government has made a very important intervention. The focus now is on how locals will benefit through irrigation projects, water supply and other job opportunities. It excites us that we now have a lasting solution to water challenges in Nkayi.”

Ziminya Dam is one of the 12 high-impact projects being implemented by the government through the Zimbabwe National Water Authority.

It is set to be the second largest inland water body in Matabeleland North after the Gwayi-Shangani Lake.
