A new secondary school in Hwange is set to transform education in the area, aligning with government’s inclusive development approach.
Nestled in the arid landscape of Nechenambe under Chief Shana in Hwange District, the new school is taking shape, offering hope and an opportunity to communities that have long endured limited access to education.
Nechenambe Secondary School is set to cut down the daily travel distance for learners by over 20 kilometres, a journey often marred by risks such as wild animal encounters and flooded rivers.
“We are grateful for the new school as it is closer to our homes. It gives us more time to study and help with chores. The long distances we travelled affected our concentration in class. With the new school, our performance will definitely improve,” a learner said.
“Some of our friends dropped out because of the difficult journey. This school will improve attendance and pass rates. When school is closer, we spend more time learning instead of travelling,” another added.
Parents and stakeholders believe the school will be a game-changer for the area, unlocking the potential for skilled human capital and curbing cases of students dropping of school.
“We are happy. Many children dropped out due to the long distance, especially girls, who found it hard to cycle over 20 km every day,” a parent said.
“We have gone years without a secondary school. This will reduce teen pregnancies and help more children pursue education. For a long time, our community has not produced professionals like nurses or teachers. This school will change that,” another parent stated.
“The school will open its doors to learners next year. One block is complete, and another is at beam level. We have also built four teachers’ cottages. So far, over US$70 000 has been invested in the project,” the Coordinator of Buy a Brick for Foundation, Mr Khumbulani Tshambo said.
The school is being constructed through the combined efforts of the local community, Hwange Rural District Council and various development partners.
