THE country is mourning a pioneer anaesthesiologist and leading light in efforts to set up specialist training for anaesthesia in the country, Professor Herbert Mapfumo Chinyanga, who died on July 2 at the age of 87.
Born in 1939, Professor Chinyanga died in South Africa, where he was receiving treatment.
In 2023, Professor Chinyanga was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award by the Zimbabwe Medical Association (ZIMA) for his exceptional contribution to the local health sector.
A medical doctor, scientist and specialist in anaesthesia and intensive care, Professor Chinyanga mentored many junior and senior students in Biomedical Sciences in various universities, including the University of Ghana, the University of Toronto and the University of Zimbabwe.
He is survived by his son Farayi and three grandchildren.
