Mwonzora pulls out of presidential race

Story by Bruce Chahwanda, Political Editor

MOVEMENT for Democratic Change (MDC-T) presidential candidate, Mr Douglas Mwonzora has pulled out of the August 23 presidential race claiming that there are irregularities related to the electoral process.

Briefing journalists at the party’s headquarters in Harare this Tuesday, Mr Mwonzora said MDC-T aspiring legislators and councillors will, however, contest in the upcoming election.

”The constitution is not there for decoration, I believe there is a minimum standard of interfering required in our electoral system and I believe the discrimination of my party in this election by the election management body is unacceptable, for that reason ladies and gentlemen, I with the concurrence of my party have withdrawn my candidature in this election. We are left with only 24 constituency candidates, even if we would win, that will be weak. That has been the decision by myself as presidential candidate and of the national council sitting yesterday,” he said.

Zimbabwe is heading for general elections on the 23rd of this month.
