Minister Coventry contests for IOC presidency

Africa’s most decorated Olympian Kirsty Coventry who is also Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture is one of the seven candidates contesting to be the next International Olympic Committee (IOC) president.

The IOC elections will be held during the 143rd IOC Session set for Greece from 18th to the 21st of March next year.

Coventry, a seven-time Olympic medalist is bidding to be the first woman and the first African to lead the International Olympic Committee.

The decorated olympian is the current chairperson of the Athletes Commission at the IOC.

She is contesting against World Athletics president and Britain’s two-time olympic champion Lord Coe, Spaniard Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr, France’s David Lappartient, Morinari Watanabe of Japan, Swede Johan Eliasch and Prince Feisal al Hussein of Jordan.

The winner will replace Thomas Bach whose second term ends next year.
