Government is advocating for the establishment of technology parks to promote research and commercialisation of innovations.
With the nation focusing on promoting a culture of innovation through the Heritage-Based Education 5.0 Model, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has been implored to invest in technology parks to create an ecosystem that promotes research, knowledge sharing, and innovation.
The issue of technology parks was topical during the week-long POTRAZ strategic planning workshop which commenced in Bulawayo this Wednesday.
The Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Hon Tatenda Mavetera, said, “Technology parks help in the commercialisation of prototypes. They encourage or promote a culture of innovation. As a country, we really need to invest in ICT.”
In line with advancing the ICT sector and promoting a culture of innovation, POTRAZ has already launched an ICT research journal.
“The authority has also achieved significant milestones in terms of research and development. The launch of the POTRAZ ICT Research Journal, featuring eight (8) articles in its inaugural volume, stands out as a major achievement,” said POTRAZ Director General, Dr Gift Machengete.
Mr Tafadzwa Zvobgo, POTRAZ board chairperson, said, “Our focus moving forward must be on enhancing regulatory efficiency, fostering inclusive digital growth and embracing innovative solutions to shape the future of our industry.”
Investment in the ICT sector through leveraging on emerging technologies is crucial in promoting innovative and forward thinking as the country targets attaining a digital economy by 2030.
