Four candidates interviewed for vacant ZEC commissioner post

Story by John Nhandara

FOUR candidates have been interviewed for appointment to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) following the resignation of a sitting commissioner.

The shortlisted candidates appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) during public interviews conducted to fill the vacancy.

Clerk of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Chokuda, described the interviews as an important process aimed at promoting transparency and safeguarding the integrity of appointments to independent commissions.

“The purpose of this process is to fill a vacancy at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. The Constitution provides that the Committee on Standing Rules and Orders conducts interviews of persons for possible appointment to various independent commissions. In this case, it is a vacancy at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

“We have conducted such interviews several times before, and I believe we continue to improve the process. We always value the opportunity to screen candidates for appointment to various organisations,” he said.

Parliament’s Committee on Standing Rules and Orders received 52 nominations following a public call for submissions. After a screening process, four candidates were shortlisted and invited to attend the public interviews.
