THE commitment was highlighted at the ongoing 62nd Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, where the Zimbabwean delegation is being led by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Mrs Vimbai Nyemba.

Addressing the session, Mrs Nyemba said Zimbabwe has implemented a range of policy, legal and institutional measures aimed at addressing migration-related challenges.

She noted that the government has revived the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration to strengthen border governance, curb irregular migration, combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling, and enhance coordination among relevant agencies.

Mrs Nyemba said Zimbabwe has also begun the process of ratifying the Protocol Against the Smuggling of Migrants and is amending the Immigration Act to align domestic legislation with the protocol’s provisions.

The permanent secretary further told the session that Zimbabwe has launched a National Migration Data Strategy to close data gaps and strengthen evidence-based policymaking and governance.

She added that the country has adopted a National Labour Migration Policy designed to promote sustainable labour migration and improve the management of migration processes.

The measures form part of Zimbabwe’s broader efforts to strengthen migration governance while upholding the rights and welfare of migrants.
