Former Vice President of Zimbabwe, Cde Phelekezela Mphoko, has been laid to rest at his home in Douglasdale, Bulawayo.
His burial was a celebration of a life well lived and dedicated to serving the people of Zimbabwe.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Ndabezinhle Mphoko reiterated how his family is saddened by this loss, citing how Cde Mphoko’s memory will forever be etched in their hearts.
“His children called him Papa and they are grateful for the life lessons he left them with. He was able to manage state work as well as giving us as a family a good upbringing. We will always miss him,” he said.
Having served in the war with Comrade Mphoko, Brigadier General (Rtd) Abel Mazinyane recalled memories shared with his late commander during the war and post-independence.
“He was a good commander, and despite being our commander he had a way of making our lives lighter while we were at war. He was prepared to lay down his life for the lives of others during the war. He was a dedicated cadre and his war escapades may seem like a fairytale now, but he lived during a tough time, but survived and led us.”
Chief mourner, Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Richard Moyo comforted the family and mourners, appreciating the contribution of the late national hero and citing how Cde Mphoko leaves behind a legacy of national unity, peace and development.

“Cde Mphoko leaves behind a legacy of national unity and peace and his contribution to the liberation of this country will never be forgotten. The ideals he fought for will always guide us to a better and prosperous Zimbabwe,” he said.
Thousands of mourners from around the country and beyond bade final farewell to the liberation stalwart whose contribution to pre and post-independence eras of Zimbabwe’s history will never be erased.
