Story by Fungai Jachi

ZIMBABWE and China have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) for cooperation in the field of higher and tertiary education, with the move expected to further improve the country’s education sector.

The MOUs signed between the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development and the Shanxi Provincial Education Department of the People’s Republic of China seek to promote educational exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Development Minister, Professor Amon Murwira says it is critical to partner institutions that can help improve the country’s education sector.

He said, “This cooperation we have embarked on will see us achieve the vision that we have for our education sector. The exchange programs will give our students a chance to experience how other countries are using education to develop. We look forward to working with our new partners as we move towards changing our education system.”

Director-General of Shanxi Provincial Education Mr Ma Jun noted that working with Zimbabwe in the education sector will further strengthen ties between the two countries.

“We shall continue working together in the education sector. We intend to carryout exchange programmes in education management and between schools, teaching staff and students. Our countries have been working together for a long time and we shall continue doing as for the development of our countries,” he noted.

The MOUs which are valid for a period of five years, will be automatically renewed.

Zimbabwe and China share cordial relations and cooperate in various fields, with the Asian country funding different flagship projects, including the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport Expansion project and the New Parliament Building.
