THE Government’s drive to improve access to healthcare services in rural communities continues to bear fruit, with the commissioning of Eden Clinic in the Doma area of Mhangura Rural District, Mashonaland West Province.
For the people of Doma, who once endured long journeys to Mhangura for medical attention, the new facility represents more than a health centre; it marks a new chapter in Zimbabwe’s pursuit of universal health coverage under Vision 2030.
Formerly known for providing herbal treatment, Eden Clinic has evolved into a fully registered medical facility offering both alternative and conventional healthcare services.
Traditional leader Headman Muzondiwa Gatsi commended the initiative, saying it promotes healthcare while encouraging environmental conservation.
“We have realised how important trees and plants are in providing herbs for treatment of various ailments through Eden Clinic. This calls on everyone to protect the environment,” he said.
Community members also expressed gratitude for the new facility.
“We used to travel long distances to Mhangura for treatment. Now we are happy that we can get medical attention here in our community, even for our children,” said one villager.
“Eden Clinic has been helping us with herbs for years. Now that it’s a proper clinic, we can access both herbal and modern treatment without paying high fees or transport costs,” added another.
The health centre, which has provided free alternative healthcare services to more than 15 000 people since 2000, is part of a broader initiative by Eden Ministries, which also runs Eden Children’s Village, a farm, and an academy, forming a holistic system of care for orphans and vulnerable children.
Eden Ministries Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ian Fry, said the organisation’s mission aligns with national development goals.
“Our mission is to provide holistic care combining herbal and modern medicine while ensuring access to free or affordable healthcare for rural communities. As said by our President, everyone has a role to play in making Zimbabwe a better country as we journey towards Vision 2030,” he said.
Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Marian Chombo, applauded the collaboration between government and private players in improving health service delivery.
“The government is working hard to ensure that key economic and social services, especially health, reach all our people regardless of where they live. I want to thank Eden Ministries for their vision and commitment to working together with the government in constructing this important facility, which will ensure that the Doma community enjoys good health,” she said.
The newly commissioned clinic currently serves about 1,000 patients per month, offering a lifeline to thousands of rural residents.
