Dominant Chapungu silence Mpopoma to lead Women’s League

CHAPUNGU Queens shot to the top of the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League table with an emphatic win over recently promoted Mpopoma Sports Academy in a match played at the Chiefs Village in Bulawayo this weekend.

The Gweru-based side demonstrated their dominance in the top-flight women’s league by comfortably dispatching the youthful Mpopoma side, who had shown early promise in their debut season.

Despite a strong start in the first four rounds of the league, Mpopoma found the going tough against a seasoned Chapungu outfit. MPOSA Head Coach Evans Neta admitted they were outplayed on the day.

“We had prepared well for the game but it wasn’t our day. It’s painful to lose points at home but we have to regroup and prepare for the next game.”

Chapungu Queens have done well in the past three seasons, and club secretary Talent Chitsaka says they want to keep pace with the big guns this season.

“It is work in progress but so far so good, we have done well in the past three seasons and we need to challenge for honours this season.”

In other matches, defending champions Herentals Queens thrashed Black Mambas 5-nil while Black Rhinos had a 10-nil victory over Red Buffaloes.

After yesterday’s matches, the race for the Premier League is now a five-horse race involving Chapungu Queens, Platinum Royals, Herentals Queens, Black Rhinos and Correctional Queens.
