Story by ZBC Reporter

THE Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill has passed through the Senate with amendments after 75 Senators voted in favour of the proposed changes, while four voted against the Bill.

The President of the Senate, Honourable Mabel Chinomona, presided over the voting process at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden on Wednesday.

Among its key provisions, the Bill seeks to extend the Presidential term from five to seven years and change the method of electing the President from a direct public vote to an election conducted by a joint sitting of Parliament.

The Senate’s overwhelming endorsement follows the Bill’s passage through the National Assembly last week.

The Bill will now proceed to the next legislative stage in accordance with parliamentary procedures.
