ZIMBABWE has reaffirmed its commitment to developing sustainable asylum and migration systems that fully respect and protect human rights.
This emerged at the ongoing 62nd Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, where the Zimbabwean delegation is being led by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Mrs Vimbai Nyemba.
Addressing the session, Mrs Nyemba said Zimbabwe has undertaken a number of policy, legal and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening migration governance and addressing emerging migration challenges.
She noted that Government has resuscitated the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration to enhance border governance, prevent irregular migration, trafficking and the smuggling of migrants, while improving coordination and joint operations among relevant agencies.
Mrs Nyemba said Zimbabwe has also commenced the process of ratifying the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants and is amending the Immigration Act to domesticate its provisions.
The Permanent Secretary further highlighted the launch of the National Migration Data Strategy, which seeks to address data gaps and strengthen evidence-based migration governance.
She added that Zimbabwe has adopted a National Labour Migration Policy aimed at promoting safe, orderly and sustainable labour migration while safeguarding the rights and welfare of migrant workers.
The measures form part of Zimbabwe’s broader commitment to strengthening migration management systems in line with international human rights standards and global migration frameworks.
