Zimbabwe put up a dominant performance to end the first day of the Boxing Day Test against Afghanistan on 363 for 4 at Queens Sports Club this Thursday.
Veteran batter Sean Williams scored his fifth test century to cap the first day of Boxing Day Test which was dominated by the hosts.
Playing at his home ground, Williams showered his full range of shots on a wicket that had some turn and he utilised his footwork to great effect as he dominated the visiting bowlers.
Williams put up a 143-run sixth wicket with his captain Craig Ervine who was on 56 not out at the close of the first day.
Earlier, debutant Ben Curran had put Zimbabwe in the front foot after a brisk 64 off 71 balls, but his opening partner Joylord Gumbie did not last long at crease after being dismissed for 9.
Takudzwanashe Kaitano did not make the most of his good start as he was caught at 45, but was the first batsman to offer support to Williams before Dion Myers also had a cameo.
Zimbabwe named three debutants going into the match – opener Ben Curran as well as bowlers Newman Nyamhuri and Trevor Gwandu while veterans Victor Nyauchi and Richard Ngarava were omitted.
The Chevrons will look to set up a big score on second day of the first Test before inviting Afghanistan to come and bat.
