Bulawayo court postpones alleged illegal alcohol production case

THE trial of Comrades Beverages Private Limited, represented by its Managing Director, Langa Moyo, failed to commence at the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court this Monday after the prosecutor handling the matter was absent.

The case has been postponed to Wednesday, when trial proceedings are expected to begin.

Moyo and the company are facing charges of allegedly manufacturing liquor without the required licence.

The alleged offence came to light last week after police officers on patrol reportedly received a tip-off about an illegal alcohol production operation at Number 38 Josiah Tongogara Street in Bulawayo.

Acting on the information, police conducted a raid at the premises and allegedly discovered liquor at different stages of production, together with equipment believed to have been used in the manufacturing process.

Investigators also reportedly recovered alcoholic beverages branded “Highlanders African Gin.”

The State alleges that the company was producing alcohol without the necessary regulatory approval, in contravention of relevant licensing requirements.

The matter is expected to return to court on Wednesday for the commencement of trial proceedings.
