UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe is positioning itself as a centre for innovation, industrialisation and specialised healthcare through two flagship facilities aligned with the Education 5.0 philosophy.
The Industrial Incubation Centre and the Specialist Medical Centre are expected to commercialise locally developed research, create jobs and expand access to advanced medical services.
The University of Zimbabwe is expanding its contribution beyond teaching and research. While the Industrial Incubation Centre is expected to transform innovative ideas into commercial enterprises, this Specialist Medical Centre will provide advanced healthcare services while serving as a hub for specialist training and medical research.
The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Ambassador Frederick Shava, says the two facilities are a practical demonstration of Education 5.0, ensuring universities produce solutions that directly benefit the nation.
“First, the innovation hub is extremely important because we want to make sure that the innovations developed in our universities find their way into commerce and industry. The innovations you have seen here should become part of our industrial network, producing goods and services for the people of Zimbabwe. This Specialist Medical Centre is equally important because it will provide services that many Zimbabweans have had to seek elsewhere. We have specialist eye care, IVF, dental services and many other specialist services. It is part of a much bigger vision that includes the Quinary Hospital, where, in future, even complex procedures such as open-heart surgery will be done here in Zimbabwe,” he said
University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Mapfumo, says the projects represent the university’s commitment to turning research into products and services that support national development.
“The Industrial Incubation Centre is the pinnacle of our research, innovation and industrialisation ecosystem. It is where we measure the success of our start-ups as they grow into real companies that contribute to the country’s economy. The centre also provides entrepreneurial skills, technical support and opportunities to work with industry. The Specialist Medical Centre is an extension of the Quinary Hospital. It is here to provide specialist healthcare services while supporting advanced medical training and research. We will train specialist doctors, conduct research and offer services that many people previously had to travel abroad to access. Services such as assisted reproduction will now be available in a public university setting, making advanced healthcare more accessible and affordable,” Professor Paul Mapfumo said.
University officials say preparations are now underway to operationalise the Specialist Medical Centre, with patients expected to begin accessing services once staffing and final administrative processes are completed. Together with the Industrial Incubation Centre, the facilities are expected to drive innovation, strengthen specialised healthcare and advance Zimbabwe’s industrialisation agenda.
