A 24-year-old Eastview man has appeared in court facing two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after allegedly killing his two young children and stabbing his wife before setting their cabin on fire.

Gift Muyengwa of Eastview Phase 10, Mabvuku, was arrested on July 20 and appeared in court in connection with the deaths of his children, Audin and Ropafadzo Muyengwa, as well as the attempted murder of his wife.

According to the State, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday while the family was asleep in their one-room wooden cabin.

Prosecutors allege that Muyengwa’s wife woke up feeling dizzy and found him armed with a kitchen knife.

He allegedly stabbed her on the head before attacking her a second time with the same knife. The complainant is said to have briefly restrained him before he allegedly stabbed her a third time, forcing her to flee and seek help.

The State further alleges that Muyengwa then turned on the couple’s two children, who were asleep, fatally stabbing them before setting the wooden cabin on fire.

The children’s bodies were later recovered from the burnt structure.

After the alleged offences, Muyengwa is accused of attempting to take his own life by stabbing himself in the chest and stomach.

He was found at the scene, arrested and taken to hospital for treatment before appearing in court.

Muyengwa was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on August 5.
