THE Zimbabwe National Army’s premier shooting competition returned after two years, bringing together members of the security services and civilians in a celebration of marksmanship, discipline and national unity at Cleveland Range in Harare, this Friday.

The Commander Zimbabwe National Army Skill-at-Arms Meet returned for the first time since 2023, reaffirming its place as the country’s flagship shooting competition.

Running under the theme, “Demystifying the Gun, Building Trust Through Sport for the Attainment of Vision 2030,” this year’s competition attracted participants from across the Zimbabwe National Army, other uniformed forces and civilians, underscoring the role of sport in strengthening relationships between the security sector and the wider community.

Zimbabwe National Army Commander, Lieutenant General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, who was the guest of honour, said the competition goes beyond marksmanship by fostering teamwork, collaboration and mutual trust among institutions.

He also highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships between the army and the private sector in support of national development.

“As much as the shoot promotes musketry skills within the contestants on one hand, on the other hand, the event offers an interactive platform for the Uniformed Forces and Non-Uniformed clubs of our society. Accordingly, let me acknowledge the moral support from the sister services, the President’s Department and non-uniformed participants. To you, the participants gracing this occasion, you have, over the years, showcased your determination and resolve through sharing skills and experiences under the canopy of sportsmanship.

“You will agree with me that this prestigious event has not only helped you sharpen your individual/team shooting skills, but has also enhanced your physical and mental stamina through rigorous competition matches, which offer realistic practice comparable to battle situations and environment. My speech would be incomplete without acknowledging the valuable support that we continue to receive from our society and the corporate world. It is my sincere hope that these relations will continue to be nurtured for our mutual benefit,” he said.

Over 30 awards were presented in recognition of outstanding performances.

Three Infantry Brigade emerged as the Best Formation, while Sergeant Mubvongi of Commando Regiment was crowned the Champion at Arms.
