Local authorities told to prioritise service delivery and inclusive development

GOVERNMENT has warned local authorities that quality service delivery is non-negotiable as Zimbabwe intensifies efforts to attain upper-middle-income status by 2030.

The message was delivered during a development assessment tour of Umguza District in Matabeleland North Province led by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Richard Moyo, on Monday.

The tour reviewed progress on a range of projects being implemented across the province’s seven districts, covering sectors such as health, education, infrastructure and economic empowerment.

Umguza Rural District Council officials highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding access to essential services.

“We have a horticulture project at Ntabazinduna and another at Emagwadini, where women are actively producing. In the education sector, 26 classroom blocks are under construction in the district, while six new schools are also being built,” said Umguza RDC representative Mr Vusa Sikhosana.

Addressing local authority officials, Honourable Moyo urged councils to ensure development projects benefit communities broadly and are implemented in line with the Government’s inclusive development agenda.

“Let us spread those projects. They are there to serve people, not individuals. The President says let us not leave anyone and any place behind, even with our limited resources, let us distribute development so everyone benefits,” he said.

Government says accelerated implementation of development projects across Matabeleland North is helping improve infrastructure, expand access to services and enhance economic opportunities for communities.

The province has witnessed increased investment in education, health and community development projects as part of the Second Republic’s drive to achieve Vision 2030.
