THE Zimbabwe senior men’s football team will look to restore pride when they face India in the Unity Cup third-place playoff at the Valley Stadium in London this Saturday.
While Zimbabwe and India are more commonly associated with cricket rivalries, the two nations will switch codes as they battle on the football pitch in the Unity Cup encounter.
The match also revives memories of Zimbabwe’s famous 1999 Cricket World Cup victory over India in Leicester, less than 170 kilometres from the Valley Stadium, where the Warriors will now attempt to script their own success under the London floodlights.
The Unity Cup has emerged as more than just a football tournament, celebrating culture, identity and heritage while bringing communities together through sport.
Zimbabwe go into the match ranked six places above India on the FIFA World Rankings, but the Warriors camp says focus and performance will be key.
“It is important that we deliver. Football is more than reputation, we must show up in our best form to win,” said Warriors midfielder Marshal Munetsi.
Captain Marvelous Nakamba said the tournament is also providing an opportunity to build for the future.
“We have an exciting blend of youngsters, and they must have a winning mentality to carry the nation into the future,” he said.
With FIFA ranking points on offer in the sanctioned Tier One international tournament, the Warriors will be aiming to finish the campaign on a positive note.
