Marondera woman in court over US$130K land fraud

A 65-year-old woman from Marondera appeared in Court this Thursday facing allegations of defrauding a local company of US$130 000 in a botched land deal involving a five-hectare plot.

Alice Chitumba Pangwai was taken to court after allegedly swindling a local company through a fake land deal purchase.

The state alleges that on March 3, 2023, Pangwai hatched a plan to defraud the complainant by misrepresenting that she was selling a 5-hectare property, which was legally registered under her company’s name, Early Bird Education Private Limited.

Energy Park is said to have entered into an agreement of sale and dispatched US$130 000 in cash to Pangwai as the full purchase price.

The court heard that after the payment, Pangwai initially cooperated through an affidavit for the cession of rights and further granted power of attorney to a local law firm to facilitate the legal transfer of the property to the complainant, but later instructed the law firm to stop the change of ownership process.

The matter came to light when representatives from Energy Park attempted to occupy the land.

Pangwai was granted US$200 bail and is expected back in court on June 10.
