CONSTRUCTION of the Technovation Centre at Lupane State University is driving employment creation and skills development in Lupane, transforming the area into an emerging hub of economic activity.
The project has created opportunities in trades such as bricklaying, carpentry, security and catering, with many local residents securing formal employment for the first time.
Beneficiaries say the initiative is not only providing income, but equipping them with practical skills that will have long-term value.
“Before this project, I was just sitting at home, doing nothing. I’m learning how to read building plans, use power tools, and work with electrical wiring. Since I am earning now, I am able to send my children to school,” said one worker.
Another beneficiary highlighted the shift in perception around access to innovation.
“We used to think innovation hubs are for people in Harare or Bulawayo. I have learned how to mix concrete properly and safely dig. My standard of living has improved ever since I started working here,” they said.
Youth involvement has also been significant, with many gaining technical competencies while contributing to the project.
“Youths have learned how to lay blocks and read a level; these skills will help them wherever they go. Local tuck shops, transport operators, and vegetable vendors are also benefiting from the innovation hub,” a youth participant noted.
University officials say the project is already delivering tangible benefits beyond infrastructure development.
“This innovation hub is creating several opportunities for people in Matabeleland North province, not just Lupane. Several jobs have been created, and this area will benefit immensely,” said Director of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Industrialisation, Dr Fortune Jomane.
Acting Director of Physical Planning, Works and Estate, Engineer Herbert Mbiza said the community is already feeling the economic impact.
“Once complete, the Technovation Centre is expected to become a hub for innovation, digital skills development, and entrepreneurship,” he said.
The project is expected to leave a lasting legacy by building a more skilled, self-reliant and economically active community in the province.
