WARRIORS captain, Marvelous Nakamba has challenged the new crop of players in the national team setup to seize their moment and make a lasting impression as Zimbabwe prepares for the Mukuru Four Nations Tournament semi-final clash against Botswana this Saturday.
With several fresh faces called into camp, Nakamba says the tournament presents a golden opportunity for emerging talent to not only represent the nation with pride, but also to cement their place in the squad going forward.
Zimbabwe lost six players to injury and replaced them with youngsters like 18-year-old Ipswich Town defender Corbin Mtunzi and 21-year-old Wales-based defender Shayne Maroodza, among others.
Fringe players like FC Platinum winger, Jarrison Selemani and last season’s top goal scorer, Washington Navaya have also been called in to continue their audition with the senior national team.
“We have a lot of new players in the squad and this is their chance to show what they can do. Playing for the national team is a big honour, so they need to give everything, work hard, and make the nation proud. At the same time, this is their moment to build their own careers and make a name for themselves,” Nakamba said.
The Warriors are using the regional tournament as part of their preparations for a busy international calendar, with competition for places expected to intensify.
Head coach Marian Marinica says while the immediate target is to win matches, there is also a deliberate focus on expanding the player pool.
“Our objective is always to win; we are representing Zimbabwe and results matter. But at the same time, we are looking at the bigger picture. We want to build a strong and competitive squad, give opportunities to more players, and be ready for the international assignments coming later this year.”
The hosts are also banking on home advantage.
“We are at home and we need to give our fans a show, but we also know that we are playing a good side and we must trade with caution,” Botswana coach Morena Ramoreboli noted.
The Warriors hunt the Zebras this Saturday for a place in the Four Nations tournament final.
