A grade seven student from Zvishavane has made history after winning a gold medal in the Robotics: Statics and Dynamics category at the Zimbabwe Science Fair 2026 held in Harare.
The achievement highlights the growing impact of Zimbabwe’s Heritage-Based Education Framework, which emphasises innovation, practical learning, and problem-solving among students.
The fair, hosted at Gateway High School last week, showcased a wide range of innovative projects by young learners from across the country, demonstrating how the Heritage-Based Education Framework is nurturing scientific talent and creativity among Zimbabwean students.
Zvishavane-based Errymapple grade seven student, Joseph Chekenya, came out top in the junior category of Robotics: Statics and Dynamics after designing an automated underground mining vehicle prototype.
“It was a big competition for me, and I have learnt a lot. It is good that we are groomed from this stage until we become professionals. I saw some designs at the competition, and I think I can develop them into big things. This is good for us as it enhances the skills and knowledge,” he said.
The competition complements the government’s vision and efforts in delivering on the dictates of the Heritage-based curriculum by equipping learners with relevant knowledge, skills and competency.
“This is a good initiative for Zimbabwe’s education sector, as well as its technology field. It is a testament to Zimbabwe’s commitment to capacitating and equipping teachers with future-ready skills. By integrating robotics into the education system, we are preparing youths for global opportunities in technology and innovation,” Errymapple Group of Schools Robotics instructor, Mr Adriot Tsaura said.
Robotics are crucial in developing problem-solving skills, encouraging critical thinking, analysis, and creativity, as well as preparing students for future careers.
