THE National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) held in Harare last weekend have prompted debate over fashion choices at the event, with some observers questioning whether certain outfits align with Zimbabwe’s cultural values.
In response, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) announced it is reviewing the awards’ dress code to ensure future ceremonies reflect the country’s cultural norms.
Speaking on the matter, NACZ Chief Executive Officer Napoleon Nyanhi said: “The National Arts Council notes with concern the liberty that has been taken by certain individuals regarding dressing at the National Arts Merit Awards. We observed outfits that seemed inconsistent with our cultural norms and values, particularly instances where men wore high heels, long wigs, heavy makeup, long eyelashes, and painted nails. In some cases, the attire appeared to promote the individual in ways that go against our cultural ethos.
“As the Arts Council, we are committed to promoting Zimbabwean culture and values. We recognise that artistic expression is vital, and NAMA as a brand is inherently artistic. However, we must also establish boundaries to ensure that dress choices are not indecent or misaligned with our traditions. Going forward, we are reviewing the terms of reference for the event’s dress code to provide clearer guidance.”
Nyanhi emphasised that the review aims to balance artistic freedom with cultural integrity, stating: “We want artists to be as expressive as possible while respecting our cultural heritage. The event went well overall, but there were areas where we believe the dress code could be strengthened.”
The NACZ’s review signals an ongoing effort to harmonise contemporary artistic expression with Zimbabwe’s cultural expectations, ensuring that NAMA remains both a celebration of creativity and a reflection of national values.
