THE body of National Hero Brigadier General (Retired) Jonathan Hungwe is lying in state at Charles Gumbo Barracks ahead of his burial at the National Heroes Acre this Friday.
Earlier, his body was taken to his rural home in Mwenezi District, where family members, community leaders and political representatives gathered to pay their final respects in recognition of his service to the nation and the ruling ZANU PF.
Residents of Masvingo Province attended a ceremony held at his farm in Rutenga, reflecting on his life and legacy. Church representatives described him as a devoted Christian whose humility stood out despite his senior military rank.
“Despite his position in the military, he was very humble and remained committed to God’s work. We related very well with him. He had so much respect for the church, and he helped a lot. He was an advisor at church. He would hold your hand and pray with you if you were having problems. We have lost such a great man,” a church representative said.
ZANU PF officials said the party had lost a dedicated cadre.
“We worked well together; he was truly dedicated to the party,” ZANU PF Central Committee member Cde Luscious Matutu said.
“As young people, we learnt a lot from him, most importantly, he taught us discipline,” ZANU PF Youth League Provincial Secretary for Gender, Cde Sikhulekile Moyo stated.
ZANU PF Central Committee member Cde Obey Mbiza added: “We knew we were covered in Mwenezi District because he worked hard for the party. He has left a huge gap within our party.”
Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, represented by a director from his office, said the province had been left poorer by his passing.
“As a province, we have lost a man who worked towards the development of this nation. We are grateful to the President for recognising his work,” Director for Masvingo Provincial Coordination, Mrs Rosemary Chingwe said.
Brigadier General (Retired) Hungwe’s body will lie in state before burial at the national shrine on Friday.
