VP Chiwenga consoles Kangai family, calls on youth to defend liberation legacy

Vice President General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has extended condolences to the Kangai family following the death of Mrs Miriam Kangai, widow of national hero Kumbirai Kangai.

VP Chiwenga visited the Kangai homestead in Glen Forest, Harare, where he paid tribute to Mai Kangai and called on the youth to safeguard and advance the legacy of the liberation struggle.

He said Zimbabwe’s independence was attained through immense sacrifice and urged the younger generation to protect the gains of the struggle.

“Zimbabwe came after a protracted struggle. Many heroes never received proper burials, sacrificing their lives for this land. We are grateful for Mai Kangai’s support of the liberation cause and Cde Kangai’s legacy. Now, it is up to you and the youth to continue this legacy,” he said.

The Kangai family thanked the Government for the support and honour extended to them, pledging to uphold the values of the liberation struggle.

“Our mother was a unifier, and we are grateful to President Emmerson Mnangagwa for recognising the family. The greatest thing she did was to establish a trust such that, as her children, we can continue with the family legacy,” her son, Mr Tinayo Kangai, said.

Mrs Miriam Kangai, who died earlier this week, is expected to be buried this Sunday at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare.
