THE Zimbabwe Handball Federation (ZHF) has commenced trials for its Under-18 and Under-20 national teams in preparation for the International Handball Federation (IHF) Trophy Zone VI Youth and Junior competitions.
The trials, held in Harare, attracted young athletes from across the country competing for a place in the national squads set to represent Zimbabwe at regional and international tournaments.
The federation emphasised that the exercise aligns with its renewed focus on grassroots development, providing emerging players with exposure to higher levels of competition.
With the previous Under-20 squad having completed its cycle, the trials also created opportunities for Under-18 players to progress into the junior ranks, while identifying new talent for the Under-18 team.
ZHF Technical Director, Bekezela Ncube, highlighted the strategic importance of early player development.
“Our main focus is on junior development. Some of the athletes taking part are as young as 15, and these trials give them a valuable opportunity to showcase their talent. This is a stepping stone towards bigger competitions such as the All-Africa Games and even the Olympic Games. By exposing young athletes early, we are helping them grow and prepare for future challenges,” he said.
Further trials are scheduled in Bulawayo from 23 to 24 January, as Zimbabwe intensifies preparations for the Zone VI Games, which will be held in Zambia in April.
