DIGITAL connectivity in Karoi has received a boost following the installation of Starlink satellite internet at schools and community facilities, a move aimed at widening access to online education, skills development and digital services.
Chikangwe Primary School, Chiedza Primary School, the Chikangwe Youth Centre and the local ZANU PF office have been equipped with the high-speed internet service, extending reliable connectivity to learners and surrounding communities that have long faced limited access to online resources.
The initiative, led by the area legislator, is intended to support education while also providing open Wi-Fi access to nearby residents, reflecting broader national efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive development.
Community members say the availability of internet access is already beginning to change how young people and adults engage with education, information and economic opportunities.
“As parents and community members, we welcome this initiative because it goes beyond the school. The open Wi-Fi allows youths and adults to learn digital skills, apply for opportunities online, and access important information. It brings development directly to the community,” Mr Abel Matsika said.
“With access to the internet, young people here can learn digital marketing, graphic design, and online trading. We can now advertise our products on social media and reach customers outside this area. This will help us create income and reduce unemployment,” Mr Andrew Bangura noted.
“Having internet at school means that our students can no longer rely only on textbooks. They can research their assignments online, watch science and technology lessons, and even interact with educational platforms,” Mr Pharaoh Ruzvidzo added.
Hurungwe Central legislator, Honourable Richard Ziki, said the initiative aligns with national development priorities under Vision 2030, which emphasise technology-driven growth and inclusive access to social services.
“This programme is part of fulfilling the Second Republic’s Vision 2030, ensuring communities are empowered through technology and education,” he said.
With improved internet access now reaching schools and nearby communities, residents believe the initiative will enhance education and unlock new digital opportunities.
