Makwasha Polyclinic nears completion in Zvishavane under devolution funds

THE construction of Makwasha Polyclinic in Zvishavane is nearing completion under the Government’s devolution programme, a development expected to benefit more than 4 000 residents by improving access to quality healthcare services and reducing long distances previously travelled to clinics and hospitals.

Located deep within the mineral-rich Great Dyke, Zvishavane is among the districts that, in previous years, experienced stunted growth due to limited investment in infrastructure.

However, the devolution programme, introduced under the Second Republic, is proving to be a game-changer for the once-overlooked district, with several projects now benefiting local communities.

Chief among these is the construction of Makwasha Polyclinic, which is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

“This facility will be kept busy serving a large population. It will be beneficial because residents will no longer have to travel long distances to access clinics and hospitals,” said a community member.

“The Government, through Zvishavane Town Council, availed devolution funds which have accelerated development in this ward. We are happy that once this clinic becomes operational, we will see a reduction in avoidable deaths, as people will be able to access treatment quickly and nearby,” another beneficiary said.

“This clinic is close to our homes, and we can easily walk there even in the middle of the night. There will be no excuse for risky home deliveries,” another resident added.

The local authority has commended the Government for fulfilling its commitment by availing devolution funds, which are transforming the economic and social landscape of the Zvishavane district.

“Healthcare is a key pillar of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1). As the town continues to grow in population and housing developments, it is our responsibility to ensure that social amenities keep pace. The completion of Makwasha Polyclinic is therefore a priority. We want to thank the Government for the devolution initiative,” said Zvishavane Town Council acting secretary, Mr Maxwell Mugandani.

Since the introduction of devolution funds, significant progress has been recorded in the healthcare sector, with new clinics being constructed in several districts across the country, as the Second Republic intensifies its inclusive development agenda of leaving no one and no place behind.
