ZNA guarantees peace, security

ZIMBABWE National Army (ZNA) Commander, Lieutenant General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, says the force will continue to guarantee peace and security to ensure a stable and attractive investment climate for Zimbabweans and investors alike.

Lieutenant General Tapfumaneyi made the remarks when he paid a courtesy call on Acting President, Colonel (Rtd) Dr Kembo Mohadi, at his Munhumutapa offices in Harare on Monday.

He said the meeting focused on strengthening coordination among security sector commanders as a key pillar in maintaining peace and national stability.

“Of course, we discussed issues to do with the army and what is expected of me as Commander. The Acting President emphasised coordination and cooperation among commanders of the security forces, the army, air force, police, prison services and the Central Intelligence Organisation,” he said.

“That was the main emphasis, especially as both the Commander of the Defence Forces and myself are new in our respective positions. Coordination is very important so that we secure the stability of this country and ensure that the people of Zimbabwe can sleep peacefully while we safeguard them.”

The ZNA Commander also explained that the visit was part of a customary process following his recent appointment.

“As you know, I was recently appointed Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, and it is our tradition to pay courtesy calls on the appointing authorities, starting with the President, then the Vice Presidents, and proceeding to my superiors, including the Minister of Defence and the Secretary for Defence. This visit forms part of that process,” he said.

Lieutenant General Tapfumaneyi assumed command of the ZNA last month following the promotion of General Emmanuel Matatu to Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the retirement of General (Rtd) Phillip Valerio Sibanda from active service.
